what is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based approach for treating substance use disorders. MAT combines FDA-approved medications – such as methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone – with counseling and behavioral therapies.

These medications help ease cravings, reduce withdrawal symptoms, and restore balance to the brain, making it easier for people to focus on healing and personal growth.

We tailor MAT to each person’s unique needs, ensuring it works best when combined with comprehensive support services. MAT is not about replacing one drug with another, but about fostering hope, reducing relapse, and supporting lasting recovery and well-being.

Medication Assisted Drug Rehabilitation Programs Frequently Asked Questions

How long is medication-assisted treatment?

The duration of the MAT program varies for each individual based on their needs and recovery progress. Some people feel ready to transition after several months, while others benefit from continuing for years, and both paths are completely normal. Your treatment team will work closely with you to find the right duration based on how you’re feeling, your progress with coping skills, and your personal goals.

If you do experience a relapse, please reach out to us right away. Since Naltrexone and Vivitrol block the effects of opioids and alcohol, trying to use more substances to feel something can be very dangerous. We’re here to help you through this without judgment, and we’ll work together to adjust your plan and add extra support to get you back on track safely.

Naltrexone and Vivitrol are not habit-forming and do not cause physical dependence, so stopping these medications does not lead to withdrawal symptoms. However, discontinuing MAT may increase your risk of relapse, so any changes to your medication regimen should be discussed thoroughly with your treatment team and made gradually with proper support.

What medication is used during MAT?

The two main MAT medications are:

Vivitrol: An injectable form of naltrexone, given before discharge for opioid or alcohol use disorder.
Naltrexone: Not an opioid, it blocks opioid effects in the brain and helps prevent relapse after detox.

If you miss your monthly Vivitrol injection, contact your treatment team immediately. The medication’s effectiveness lowers over time, potentially increasing the risk of a relapse. Your team will reschedule your injection as soon as possible and recommend additional support during the gap in medication coverage.

At New Chapter Recovery, we accept all forms of major insurance and work with our clients whose insurance policies may not cover addiction treatment through outpatient services.

We pride ourselves in delivering direct services to our clients at a small fraction of the cost while providing the highest quality care for addiction and co-occurring mental disorders.
